How to move the cursor on iPhone: the space-bar trackpad and more
Tapping between two letters on a phone screen rarely lands where you meant. The iPhone has a better way built in, and it is on almost every keyboard: hold the space bar.
In short. Touch and hold the space bar until the keys go blank, then slide your finger: the keyboard is a trackpad and the cursor follows. Put a second finger down to select text. You can also touch and hold in the text itself to magnify the cursor and drag it.
The space-bar trackpad
- Touch and hold the space bar with one finger until the keyboard turns light grey and the letters disappear.
- Slide your finger anywhere on the keyboard. The cursor moves with it, across lines as well as along them.
- To select, keep the first finger down and touch the keyboard with a second one, then move the first.
- Lift your finger and type.
Without the keyboard, touch and hold in the text until the cursor is magnified, then drag it. A long document has a scroller on its right edge for the big jumps.
On a third-party keyboard
Most keyboards from the App Store copy the space-bar trackpad, so the habit carries over. Some add a few things of their own.
The cursor in Pilcrow
- Hold the space bar for the trackpad, as on Apple’s keyboard. Slow movements are precise; a fast flick crosses a long message, so getting to the start of a paragraph is one stroke.
- Cursor keys on the bar. ‹ and › tools move one character at a time, for the one-letter fix a trackpad tends to overshoot. Choose them under Settings › Toolbar.
- Strokes lock to a direction, so a thumb drifting upwards does not slide the cursor along the line.
- A plain slide along the space bar switches language when you have two or more. If you would rather it moved the cursor, set Settings › Gestures › Slide along space.
The trackpad and cursor keys stay free after the three free days.
